How to attract ladybirds?
Ladybirds, lacewings, hoverflies, parasitic wasps, ground beetles, toads, hedgehogs and tits eat pests for free. Keep something in flower from spring to autumn (phacelia, buckwheat, dill, marigolds), leave a little untidiness for winter, put out water, and don't spray. All of them, with photos, are on the Garden helpers page. A lacewing larva eats 100–150 aphids a day, ground beetles eat slugs at night, soldier beetles hunt aphids and caterpillars, and in the south the mantis helps. The red and black firebug on lime trees is not a pest.
