How to make a living willow fence?
Willow roots from bare sticks pushed into the ground. In winter (January–February, while it is dormant) cut one-year rods, push them 20–30 cm into moist soil about 20 cm apart at 45°, half one way and half the other, and weave them into diamonds: where they cross they grow together into a living fence or windbreak. Water the first summer and cut new shoots back each winter. Cut to the stump (coppiced), willow regrows several metres a year: rods for baskets and plant supports, mulch, summer fodder for goats and rabbits. Its roots hold the banks of ponds and streams: stakes and woven rows of live willow on a slope stop it washing away. Don't plant it within 10 m of drains and foundations.
