How to keep worms at home?
In a wormery the key is not to overfeed: add a new portion when the worms have moved into the last one, in a thin layer and not over the whole surface. Bigger pieces turn sour less often than chopped ones. Overfeeding makes it sour, wet and airless: fruit flies and white pot worms appear, worms shrink or try to escape. Moisture: squeeze a handful: a few drops should come out; torn corrugated cardboard soaks up the excess, a pinch of dolomite lime once a week settles the acidity. Lay a thick cloth or hessian on top and gently turn the top layer once a week. Worms don't need sand. Finished worm compost is dark and even: put melon rinds or apples to one side, the worms move over within a day, and take the rest.
